Apple
is working on developing generative artificial intelligence tools that could compete with those from
Alphabet,
OpenAI and others, according to Bloomberg, which cited people with knowledge of the matter.
The Bloomberg story said
Apple
has not yet developed a strategy for how it would provide consumers access to the technology. According to the report, Apple (ticker: AAPL) has created “its own framework to create large language models,” known as Ajax, as well as an “Apple GPT” chatbot.
Apple hasn’t commented on the report.
Barron’s last month noted that Apple had surprisingly little to say about artificial intelligence software in the keynote for its recent developers conference. While Apple remains by far the largest technology company by market capitalization, the company stands alone as the one tech giant that has yet to announce a strategy for generative AI, chatbots and large language models.
Apple was a pioneer in voice-based virtual assistants, launching Siri 12 years ago. But Siri’s capabilities now seem under-powered compared to text-based chatbots like ChatGPT from OpenAI,
Microsoft
Bing Chat and Alphabet’s Bard.
The Bloomberg report noted that Apple’s AI tool “essentially replicates Bard, ChatGPT and Bing AI, and doesn’t include any novel features or technology.” Nonetheless, the report said that “people familiar with the work” believe Apple is aiming to make a significant AI-related announcement next year.
Apple shares were inching up 0.3% on Wednesday to $194.23, while both
Microsoft
(MSFT) and
Alphabet
(GOOGL) shares were down more than 1%.
